Meettaatha Oru Veenai

Song : Meettaatha Oru Veenai
Movie Name : Poonthottam
Singer : Hariharan, Mahalakshmi Iyer
Music Director : Illayaraja

How is it possible that you can listen to a song and tell almost surely thats its composed by Illayaraja ? I saw the movie Amadeus and was thinking about Illayaraja all through. Its said that Emperor Joseph II remarked "Too many notes in your music!" and when I saw this scene in the movie, I thought "Thats so apt for Illayaraja". This is not the most intricate of his compositions, but for people who are quick to write off Illayaraja, this song should serve as a warning (as would songs in lots of other later movies). What I like about this song, is how the intricacy is in the vocals, in addition to the orchestrization. The synthesizer adds the zing to this song that it deserves. Hariharan and Mahalakshmi Iyer are fabulous as always!

Bhagyam Poddunna

Song : Bhagyam Poddunna
Movie Name : Vennela (2005)
Singer : Funky, Sudeep, Saindhavi
Music Director : Mahesh Shankar

I heard this song a few days ago and thought "Hmm..Interesting..". I heard this again today and got totally hooked in. Its a good funky song as is the rest of the album. Vennela has a very fresh feel to it, as a film and I am really looking forward to seeing this movie. I was initially afraid that it would be a very "confused" album, and I should say that, it was my initial and to some extent, is my current opinion of this album. But, hey freshness in songs always catches my attention. By the way, Mahesh Shankar is the same guy of Flavours fame and I think he has been extremely consistent so far. Who is this Saindhavi ? Usha's voice twin ?? (Thats a huge compliment by my standards) My other pick(s) from this album:

"Chestara Love"

Thaka thaka thaiyya

Song : Thaka Thaka Thaiyya
Movie Name : Evadi Gola Vadide (2005)
Singer : Karthik and Usha
Music Director :
Kamalakar

The song has been sung by two of my favourite singers. Usha and Karthik have the ability to put the life back in any song and they are certainly here to stay, should they choose to do so. Kamalakar has been a consistent performer so far, although EVV's movies certainly dont help anyone that much. I do hope he gets noticed and belts out some more melodious tunes. I like the charanam in this song much more than the pallavi. Usha is the winner of this competition :)

Feel Good Inc.

Song : Feel Good Inc.
Artist : Gorillaz
Album : Demon Days

Windmill Windmill for the land...
Turn forever hand in hand

I heard this song while flipping through TV channels on some random advertisement and I thought it was kind of cheesy. Didnt sound anything new, but then I got interested and heard it a couple of times later on, thought it was just about ok. Recently, I saw the song on MTV Video Awards and was just outright blown away by the song. It was the simple bass guitar in the background, but I heard it the first time. And the whole of today I was pretty much listening to this song. If you have an ipod and a Bose Sound system, then you shouldnt be missing this song ... at high volume!

Thanka Thingal

Song : Thanka Thingal
Movie Name : Indraprastham (2002)
Singer : Sreekumar M G and K S Chitra
Music Director :
Vidya Sagar

Vidyasagar is one of my favourite music directors among the current generation. I think his "flaw" is that he is a bit too much melody oriented, while people would like more "zing" in songs. The fan of melody that I am, Vidyasagar is no big surprise. I saw this song on cable a long time ago, on the top 10 songs of Malayalam, and was (then) surprised at how there were such good songs in Malayalam. This song is really beautiful, extremely well sung by Chitra (I dont have too many nice things to say about Sreekumar though). Vidayasagar is at his usual melodious best. The first interlude has a hindustani sounding alaap, which reminds me of "Poo Vaasam" from Anbe Sivam (another awesome meoldy from Vidyasagar, which is sure to figure on my list, should I keep at updating my blog often) :)
