Song : Sandhyaraagapu Sarigamalo, Priyatama
Movie Name :Indrudu Chandrudu, Priyatama
Singer : S Janaki & SPB
Music Director : Illayaraja
You should listen to this two songs and tell me what is so similar about them..or what is NOT so similar about them. When I hear "Priyatama.." I have the other song running in my head so strongly, that I have to turn this off and switch to "Sandhyaragapu..". I think Sandhyaragapu is an intense, more haunting version of "Priyatama.." owing to its much richer orchestrization. "Priyatama" is an innocent version which will make you smile, while "Sandhyaraagapu" will make you exclaim "WOW!!!" The guitars in "Sandhyaragapu" are the mark of Raaja, that which makes him look much ahead of his times! I love the prelude for both the songs, a different flavour each one. If you like haunting numbers, you will LOVE these songs too!

Jeevan ke har mod pe
Song : Jeevan ke har mod pe
Movie Name :Jhootha Kahin Ka
Singer : Asha Bhonsle & Kishore Kumar
Music Director : R D Burman
Firstly, I havent heard the original version yet (as I havent been able to locate it) and I would GREATLY appreciate it if anyone can mail me a link to the original version. I have heard this remix-version of the song and its a beautiful haunting number of RD Burman. I am just dying to hear Asha and Kishore steal the show in this song. The remix from the album "Ek Hasina Thi" (which also features the song "tu tu hai wahi..") is pretty neatly done too BUT for the irritating male voice. And this is a hat-trick for Uma. I wouldnt have known this song if not for her.

Woh hai zara
Song : Woh hai zara
Movie Name : Shagird
Singer : Lata Mangeshkar & Mohd Rafi
Music Director : Laxmikant Pyarelal
Again a re-discovery, thanks to Uma. I had seen Shagird long ago, one of the few movies of Joy Mukherjee that I saw and I loved the song immediately. Laxmikant Pyarelal are the life of this song as much are Lata and Rafi. My favourite parts of the song are in the stanza - "Batein yun banaye hain ke...hoo hoo..hoooo..hoo.." what a way to wrap up the stanza! The simplicity of the song is just amazing..too few instruments and an absolutely brilliant haunting melody! I would also recommend the Instant Karma - Dance Masti remix version of this song.

Aaja piya tohe pyaar doon
Song : Aaja piya tohe pyaar doon
Movie Name : Baharon ke Sapne
Singer : Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director : R D Burman
Firstly, thanks to Uma for rediscovering this song for me. She's played the remix version of the song so many times (and I loved it each time!). I heard the original version today from Baharon ke Sapne. Lata Mangheshkar is just A.W.E.S.O.M.E! You can hear the strumming of the guitar throughout the song, which just elevates the melody in it. R D Burman again at his amazing best! I must say this very frankly, when I heard the initial parts of the song, the voice sounded EXACTLY like Uma's voice. So yes, Uma, this entry is dedicated to you!

Ya ya ya
Song : Ya ya ya
Movie Name : Devaragam
Singer : Chitra & Unni Krishnan
Music Director : MM Keeravani
Happened to chance upon this old favourite of mine. This particular version is a Malayalam song but I distinctly remember a telugu original version of this song. (Incidentally, Devaragam got dubbed back to telugu). The song has been recorded extremely well and 'sharply'. This is one of those songs where I like the charanam more than the pallavi. A typical rural beat has been westernized and used rather effectively at the beginning of each charanam. Once again Keeravani excels in the use of the traditional flute and violin in the interludes. I will come back and edit this post to include details of the Telugu original. Till then please listen and enjoy the malayalam version.

Pusindi Pusindi
Song : Pusindi Pusindi
Movie Name : Sitaramayyagari Manavaralu
Singer : Chitra & SPB
Music Director : MM Keeravani
Yet another gem from Keeravani. Keeravani excels in the use of flute, violin, strings, keyboard ...you name it, you find it in this song. It all started with my search for a "signature" in Keeravani's songs. This genius seems to have none! What I am mildly contended with, is having found that his melodious interludes seem to have a sharp twist in between..a brief pause and then a start again.. (found this pattern only in KshanaKshanam's Jamurathiri and Criminal's Telusa manasa as of now) Anyway, thanks to Keeravani for a wonderful song! And thanks to Chitra garu and SPB once again !!

Feel My Love
Song : Feel My Love
Movie Name : Arya
Singer : Karthik
Music Director : Devisri Prasad
(This song should have made it on to this list much earlier, but didnt ..only because of my laziness!)
Devi makes me repeatedly feel that music is all about striking the right frequencies in your brain, and that he is doing a particularly good job of it. When I heard "Kanulu terachina" from Anandam and began to like it instantly, I was of the opinion that it was a song made by a computer to make sure that the right parts of the brain are getting excited by the sound waves. This soothing song from Arya has been crafted rather well. the charanams take a small dip and then reach a really peppy high point, while Karthik takes the high pitch portions smoothly..only to be followed by "feeeel myyy lovvvee.." in a really soothing fashion. A tailor-made love song!

O My Brother
Song : O My Brother
Movie Name : Arya
Singer : Ravi Varma
Music Director : Devisri Prasad
A really funny song. I have been hearing this song for quite a few days now, but today I was engrossed in my work, and just happened to pay attention to the lyrics, and they are absolutely hillarious!! Like someone wrote in their review of the song, after hearing to the lyrics, you surely think "hmm...I never thought of it THAT way!" Though its not apt to say this over here, the other songs in this movie have caught on slowly (much to my delight!). Its topping the charts now! Go Devi !!
